The M1/M2/M3 Mac Mini is a compact powerhouse, but Apple Silicon changed what's upgradeable. Here's what you can fix, what you can't, and when repair beats replacement.
Common Mac Mini Issues- Won't power on / no display — often the power supply, HDMI/port, or a cable, not the logic board.
- Overheating and fan noise — dust buildup; an internal clean restores airflow.
- Wi-Fi/Bluetooth dropouts, USB-C or HDMI port damage.
- Storage full or a failing SSD (see below).
- RAM: on M1/M2/M3 it is unified memory soldered to the chip — it cannot be upgraded later. Choose the right size at purchase.
- Storage: also soldered on most models — not a simple swap. Use external Thunderbolt/USB-C SSDs to add fast storage cheaply.
- Ports/cooling: serviceable — port repair and thermal cleaning are common jobs.
Because RAM and storage are soldered, a failed logic board is the pricey scenario — but many "dead" Mac Minis are actually a power, port or cable fault that's an affordable fix. Chip-level repair can also recover a board with a failed component for far less than an Apple board swap. Get a diagnostic before assuming the worst — and always keep a backup, since soldered storage can't simply be moved to a new unit.
