The most common question we get is not about price or turnaround — it is "will I lose my photos?" For most repairs the honest answer is no, because the storage drive is never touched. But "most" is not "all", and a backup costs you an hour while losing a decade of photos costs you something you cannot buy back. Here is how to do it properly and what to ask before you hand anything over.
Which repairs actually put data at risk?
| Repair | Risk to your data |
|---|---|
| Screen, keyboard, hinge, body, fan or thermal service | None — the drive is not involved |
| Battery or charging port replacement | None |
| RAM upgrade | None |
| SSD/HDD upgrade or migration | Low, but the drive is handled — back up first |
| Motherboard / board-level repair | Low directly, but the machine is already unstable — back up if it still boots |
| OS reinstall or virus removal | Real risk — this is the one that most often involves data loss |
| Liquid damage | Highest — the drive itself may already be affected |
If your laptop still boots, back it up before any repair in the bottom three rows. If it does not boot, say so when booking — data recovery is a different conversation from repair, and the order of operations matters.
Backing up when the laptop still works
- Start with what is irreplaceable — photos, documents, project files. Software can be reinstalled; your daughter's first birthday cannot.
- Use two destinations if you can. An external drive plus a cloud service (Google Drive, OneDrive, iCloud) means one failure does not cost you everything.
- Check the hidden folders people forget: Desktop, Downloads, browser bookmarks and saved passwords, email stored locally in Outlook (.pst files), and WhatsApp Desktop media.
- Use the built-in tools. Windows: File History, or Settings → System → Backup. macOS: Time Machine, which does the whole machine properly.
- Verify the backup actually opens. Open a few files from the backup, not the original. An unverified backup is a guess, and this is the step almost everyone skips.
If the laptop will not turn on
Do not keep trying to power it on repeatedly, particularly if you hear clicking from the drive — each attempt can make a recoverable situation unrecoverable. In most no-boot cases the data is perfectly intact and the fault is elsewhere (power, board, screen), and the drive can simply be read. Tell the repair shop that data recovery matters to you before work starts, so the job is approached with that as the priority.
Questions worth asking any repair shop
- "Will this specific repair involve my drive at all?" A technician who knows their work will answer precisely, not vaguely.
- "Will anyone access my files?" The answer should be no beyond what the diagnosed repair requires.
- "If you need to reinstall the OS, will you ask me first?" This should never happen without explicit consent.
- "Can you back up my data for me, and what does that cost?" A reasonable service; just establish the price upfront.
- "What happens to my data after the repair?" Any copy made for the repair should be removed afterwards.
A note on privacy
A laptop holds your banking logins, saved passwords, personal photos and work documents. You are entitled to ask how that is handled and to get a straight answer. At Xigox we do not access personal files beyond what the diagnosed repair requires, devices are handled on restricted-access benches, and anything we copy for a repair is removed afterwards. If a shop is evasive about this, that is information too.
