Three kinds of laptop keyboard, three kinds of repair
Screwed-in keyboard module
Common on business laptops and many ThinkPad, Latitude and ProBook models. The keyboard is a separate part held by a few screws, and replacing it is quick and inexpensive.
Clip-in keyboard
Found on a number of older and budget laptops. It snaps into the top case and lifts out with the right tool, though the ribbon cable needs patience.
Keyboard riveted to the palmrest
Many thin laptops fix the keyboard permanently to the top cover. The repair is a palmrest-and-keyboard assembly, which costs more because the touchpad often comes with it.
Layout and backlight

Some of these are a cheap repair, some point at liquid damage that has reached the board. We tell you which.
A few keys do nothing
Usually a damaged trace or a lifted contact under those keys. A keyboard replacement fixes it.
Whole rows or columns are dead
The keyboard matrix or its ribbon cable. We check the cable and connector before assuming the keyboard.
Ghost typing and repeating letters
A short from liquid or a failing keyboard that registers keys that no one pressed. Stop using the laptop until it is checked.
Keys feel sticky or do not spring back
Residue from a spill. Light cases are cleaned, heavy ones need a new keyboard.
Backlight is dim, uneven or gone
The backlight strip or its connector. On some models the backlight can be replaced on its own.

After a spill
What to do in the first few minutes
Power the laptop off at once and unplug the charger, because liquid and a live circuit is what does the real damage. If the battery is removable, take it out. Tip the laptop on its side or place it open and upside down over a towel so liquid can run out of it, and do not shake it or switch it back on to see whether it works.
A sugary drink does more harm than water, because the residue keeps conducting and corroding after it dries. The best chance of saving a spilled-on laptop is cleaning the board quickly, so book within a day or two rather than waiting to see whether it dries out. If the board needs attention, that is a workshop job and we collect the laptop free of charge.

Keep the new one healthy
Keeping a keyboard alive in Mumbai
- Keep drinks away from the laptop, or at least on the far side of the desk from where the laptop is.
- In monsoon, do not leave the laptop in a damp bag. Humidity corrodes keyboard contacts slowly and invisibly.
- Clean with a dry or slightly damp cloth and never spray liquid onto the keys.
- A thin keyboard cover protects against crumbs and drops, but remove it before closing the lid, so the screen is not pressed.
- If you eat at the laptop, tilt it and tap out the crumbs every few days, because crumbs under the keys cause sticking.
