Webcam or microphone not working before a video call? It's usually a privacy setting or driver — quick to fix once you know where to look.
Privacy & Access- Windows Settings → Privacy & security → Camera / Microphone — allow access for your apps.
- Check the physical privacy shutter or Fn key that many laptops use to disable the webcam.
- Close other apps using the camera — only one app can use it at a time.
- In the app (Zoom/Teams/Meet) and in Sound settings, select the correct camera and microphone.
- Update or reinstall the camera/audio drivers in Device Manager.
- Run the Windows audio troubleshooter for mic issues.
- If the device doesn't appear in Device Manager at all, the camera/mic module or its cable may have failed — an affordable replacement.
- After a drop or spill, the module or connector can be damaged.
If settings and drivers don't fix it, a technician can test and replace the webcam/mic module or reseat its cable — a small, same-day job. As a stopgap, an external USB webcam or headset gets you back on calls immediately.
