Every monsoon we see the same pattern: a spike in no-power laptops, corroded ports and keyboards that stopped responding weeks after someone got caught in the rain. Mumbai humidity does not usually kill a laptop on the day — it does it slowly, through corrosion that starts invisibly and surfaces a month later. Here is what actually causes the damage and what genuinely prevents it.
How humidity damages a laptop (it is not just rain)
- Corrosion. Humid air carries moisture onto the board. Combined with dust and the small voltages present even when the laptop is off, it slowly corrodes contacts and traces — the single most common monsoon failure we see.
- Condensation. Bringing a cold, air-conditioned laptop into warm humid air causes moisture to form inside the chassis, exactly like a cold glass sweating. Powering it on at that moment is how a machine that was never rained on dies.
- Port oxidation. USB, HDMI and charging ports oxidise first — intermittent charging or a port that only works at an angle is often early corrosion, not a cable fault.
- Trapped moisture in bags. A damp laptop bag is a sealed humid chamber. The laptop sits in it for hours, which is worse than brief exposure.
Prevention that actually works
- Use a genuinely waterproof bag or a dry sleeve — not a "water-resistant" one in heavy Mumbai rain. This is the single highest-value change.
- Let the laptop acclimatise. Coming from AC into humid air, leave it closed and off for 15–20 minutes before powering on. This one habit prevents a surprising share of condensation failures.
- Add silica gel packets to your laptop bag and replace them monthly. Cheap, and they work.
- Never store it on the floor during monsoon — humidity is highest at floor level, and it is the first place water reaches.
- Keep it powered on periodically. A laptop left unused for weeks in humid conditions is more likely to corrode than one used regularly — the mild warmth of use drives moisture off.
- Dry the bag, not just the laptop. A dry laptop returned to a damp bag is back where it started.
Early warning signs worth acting on
Monsoon damage announces itself before it becomes expensive. Any of these in the weeks after exposure is worth an inspection:
- Charging that only works when the cable is held at a certain angle
- Keys that need a harder press than before, or that stick
- USB devices disconnecting intermittently
- Trackpad behaving erratically
- A faint musty smell from the vents
- The laptop running hotter than usual (corrosion affecting thermal sensors)
The first ten minutes after a spill or soaking
What you do immediately matters more than anything that happens afterwards.
- Power off immediately — hold the power button. Do not shut down normally; speed matters more than tidiness here.
- Unplug the charger and disconnect everything.
- Tilt it keyboard-down, open, like a tent so liquid drains away from the board rather than deeper into it.
- Do not use a hairdryer. Heat pushes moisture further in and can warp components. This is the most common well-intentioned mistake.
- Do not put it in rice. It does essentially nothing for moisture already on the board, and rice dust gets into ports. This myth costs people their laptops.
- Do not power it on "just to check." Powering a wet board is what turns a cleanable problem into a dead one.
- Get it to a technician the same day. Corrosion begins within hours. The difference between same-day and next-week is frequently the difference between a clean and a board replacement.
Why speed matters so much
Liquid damage is not a single event — it is an ongoing chemical process. Professional ultrasonic board cleaning removes residue and neutralises corrosion before it eats through traces, and it is dramatically more effective in the first 24 hours than a week later. Machines brought in promptly are usually recovered; machines brought in after a month of "it seemed fine" often are not.
If your laptop has been soaked or spilled on, our ₹350 inspection tells you honestly what state the board is in — and if it is beyond economical recovery, we say so rather than charging for work that will not hold.
