Acer's four main laptop lines break in four different ways. Aspire laptops tend to suffer plastic and wear faults, Swift models are thin and often have soldered memory, and Nitro and Predator gaming laptops run hot and need regular cooling work. Xigox repairs all four in Mumbai. Our price list shows the same indicative starting bands for each line, with the final quote set by your model.
Acer laptops also have a few BIOS habits that catch owners out, especially when reinstalling Windows. This guide covers what usually fails on each line, the boot-menu quirk that stops people from installing Windows from a USB drive, how to read gaming-laptop heat, which upgrades are possible and what repairs cost.
What fails first on Aspire, Swift, Nitro and Predator laptops?
The line you own tells you where to look first. Build quality, cooling design and upgrade options differ a lot between a basic Aspire and a Predator, so the same symptom can mean different things.
| Acer line | Built for | What typically fails | Upgrade outlook |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aspire | Home, study, office | Hinge mounts and plastic casing, battery wear, slow hard disks on older units | Often one or two memory slots and a drive bay; check the model |
| Swift | Slim, light, portable | Battery wear, display cable strain, keyboard faults | Memory is often soldered; storage varies |
| Nitro | Mid-range gaming | Dust-blocked fans, dry thermal paste, battery wear | Generally two memory slots and extra M.2 space |
| Predator | High-end gaming | Fan wear, heat under sustained load, high-refresh screens, charger strain | Usually the most upgradeable, though models vary |
Our Acer Nitro and Swift repair guide covers specific models in more detail, and the line pages describe the service for Aspire and Nitro laptops.
Whichever line you own, quote the full model number, not just the marketing name. Acer prints it on the underside label. It looks like A315-58 for an Aspire 3, SF314-512 for a Swift 3 or AN515-58 for a Nitro 5. That code, not the friendly name, identifies the board, panel and battery your laptop shipped with. Photograph the label, including the serial number, and send it with your enquiry so the quote matches the right parts.
Why won't an Acer laptop boot from a USB drive?
On many Acer laptops, the F12 boot menu is switched off by default. Pressing F12 at the logo does nothing, so people assume the USB stick or the laptop is broken. The fix is a setting in the BIOS, and it's the most common reason a Windows reinstall stalls on an Acer.
- Switch the laptop off, plug in the USB drive and press the power button.
- Tap F2 repeatedly at the Acer logo to open the BIOS.
- On the Main tab, find "F12 Boot Menu" and change it to Enabled.
- If the drive still doesn't appear, open the Security tab. On many Acer models, Secure Boot and boot-mode options stay greyed out until you set a supervisor password.
- Save with F10, restart and tap F12 for the boot menu.
- Remember the supervisor password. A forgotten BIOS password can lock you out of the setup menu, and clearing it isn't a quick fix on every model.
If you only want to reset Windows, you can skip all this. Settings, System, Recovery and Reset this PC does it from inside Windows. Our Windows reinstall guide explains when to use which route.
How do you read the heat and other warning signs on an Acer?
Heat on Nitro and Predator models
NitroSense on Nitro laptops and PredatorSense on Predator laptops show temperatures and fan speeds and let you change modes. Check them before assuming the cooling hardware has failed. A laptop left in a quiet or battery-saving profile will run cooler and slower by design, which looks like a fault but isn't.
If temperatures spike under load even in Performance mode, vents are probably blocked or the paste has dried. Dust builds in the heatsink fins over time, so a cleaning and repaste is the usual maintenance. Clear the vents with the laptop off, and don't spin the fans with compressed air, which can damage the bearings. For persistent overheating, a technician opens it and cleans the heatsink properly.
Which other symptoms need attention first?
Not every fault is equally urgent. These five come up often on Acer laptops, and the first move for each costs nothing.
- Keyboard backlight off but keys work: check the Fn shortcut and the BIOS or Acer app setting before suspecting a failed keyboard.
- Screen flickers as the lid moves: usually the display cable, which is common on thin lids. Stop adjusting the lid and get it checked.
- Fan roars at idle on a Nitro: look at the NitroSense profile, then at dust in the vents.
- Battery drops from 40 percent to off: worn cells. Run a battery report to confirm wear.
- Wi-Fi disappears after sleep: often a power-saving setting on the wireless adapter, though a failing card can do the same.
Which Acer upgrades are possible?
Upgradeability depends on the model, not just the line. Nitro and Predator models usually offer two memory slots and more than one M.2 storage slot, while Swift laptops often solder the memory to the board. Aspire sits in between, with some models offering a slot and others not.
| Upgrade | Starting from (indicative) | Warranty |
|---|---|---|
| 8GB RAM | ₹1,499 - ₹2,499 | 6 Months |
| 16GB RAM | ₹2,499 - ₹3,999 | 6 Months |
| 512GB SSD | ₹2,499 - ₹3,999 | 1 Year |
| 1TB SSD | ₹3,999 - ₹5,999 | 1 Year |
Send the exact model name from the underside label before buying parts, so we can confirm the slot layout and memory type. Mixed or wrong-type memory is the usual cause of an upgrade that doesn't boot.

Should you repair or replace an older Acer?
- Repair: a worn battery, keyboard, hinge, fan or storage drive, when the rest of the laptop is sound.
- Look closely: an Aspire with a cracked casing and a weak battery, since two or three parts add up.
- Compare with replacement: board faults on older, low-value machines. Get the full quote and weigh it against a refurbished laptop.
Frequently asked questions
How do I open the BIOS on an Acer laptop?
Tap F2 repeatedly as soon as the Acer logo appears after you press the power button. If it opens Windows instead, restart and start tapping sooner. Choose Restart rather than Shut down, because Fast Startup shortens the window in which the key works.
Can I add RAM to an Acer Swift?
Often not, because Swift models commonly solder the memory. Some have a single free slot, so check the exact model before buying anything.
Why is my Acer Nitro so loud?
Fans run hard when the processor and graphics chip are hot. Dust, dry paste or a performance profile left on maximum are the usual reasons. A cleaning and repaste restores cooling margin on most Nitro laptops.
Do you offer pickup for Acer laptops?
Yes. Pickup and delivery are free across Mumbai, Thane, Vasai-Virar and Palghar, and most common repairs finish the same day.
For a written quote, send your Acer's model name and the fault or WhatsApp +91 74997 61196. You can compare costs on the price list first.
