How to Fix Laptop Not Turning On
A completely dead laptop is stressful, but the fix could be simple. Follow this diagnosis flowchart before assuming the worst.
Step 1 — Power Source Check
Try a different charger (same wattage and voltage). Check the charging LED — if it doesn't light up, the issue is the charger or charging port. Try removing the battery (if removable) and powering directly from AC adapter.
Step 2 — Hard Reset
Disconnect charger, remove battery (or hold power button for 30 seconds on sealed laptops), then reconnect and try again. This drains residual charge and resets the power circuit.
Step 3 — RAM Reseat
Open the back panel, remove RAM sticks, clean the contacts with an eraser, reseat firmly. Try one stick at a time. Bad RAM is a common cause of "no display" power-on issues.
Step 4 — Display vs System
If fans spin and lights come on but screen is black: connect an external monitor. If external works, the issue is the laptop display or its cable. If external also shows nothing, it's motherboard or GPU.
