A worn laptop battery can't be repaired in any meaningful sense, it has to be replaced, but many "battery problems" aren't the battery at all. They're a failing charger, a worn charging port, a driver glitch or a charging fault on the motherboard. Sorting out which one you have first can save you from paying for a battery you don't need. Indicative replacement starts at ₹1,499 and runs to ₹4,999.
That's the short answer. The longer one covers how to tell the four causes apart, a two-minute check that shows how worn your battery is, the genuine fixes worth trying first and when to stop and book a replacement. If the battery has started to bulge, skip ahead to the safety section, because that changes the advice entirely.
Is it the battery, the charger or the laptop itself?
Start from what the laptop does, because the symptoms point to different parts. The table pairs common behaviours with their usual cause and whether it's a fix or a replacement. Use it to decide what to test with a borrowed charger or a different socket before spending anything.
| What happens | Usual cause | Fix or replace? |
|---|---|---|
| Dies as soon as you unplug, but runs fine on the charger | Dead or badly worn battery | Replace the battery |
| Percentage jumps from 40 to 5 or the laptop shuts down at "30 percent" | Worn cells or a confused charge gauge | Check wear first, then recalibrate or replace |
| Windows says "Plugged in, not charging" | Charge limit, heat, a failing battery or a charger of the wrong wattage | Check settings and charger, then the battery |
| Charges only when the cable is held at an angle | Worn charging port or damaged cable | Repair the port or replace the cable |
| Charger is warm, light is off, laptop never charges | Faulty adapter | Replace the adapter |
| Battery icon shows no battery at all | Disconnected cell, driver issue or board fault | Diagnose before buying a battery |
If the cable only works at an angle, the culprit is usually the port, not the battery. See our charging port repair page for how that repair works, and why a laptop stops charging for a deeper checklist.
How can you check battery wear in two minutes?
On Windows, open Command Prompt as an administrator and type powercfg /batteryreport, then press Enter. The command saves an HTML report and tells you where. Open it and compare two figures: design capacity, which is what the battery held when new, and full charge capacity, which is what it holds now. The wider the gap, the more worn the cells.
The same report lists your recent battery usage and, on many laptops, the cycle count. Some makers also offer their own checkers: a battery health option in Lenovo Vantage, in HP's BIOS settings, or in Dell's BIOS and support tools. On a MacBook, open System Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health.
A "Service Recommended" message means the battery has aged beyond Apple's expectations. Apple says current MacBook batteries are designed to keep 80 percent of their original capacity at 1,000 charge cycles. Our fuller guide on how to check laptop battery health shows how to read these numbers.
Treat roughly 80 percent of design capacity as a rule of thumb, not a verdict. A battery at 85 percent is fine. One at 50 percent that's falling fast is effectively finished, however it reads on a given day.
What can you genuinely fix before replacing the battery?
A few things really do help, and none of them cost much. Work through them in this order, one at a time, so you know which one worked.
- Try a known-good charger of the correct wattage, plugged straight into a wall socket, not an extension.
- Restart with a full power drain. Unplug everything and hold the power button for 10 to 15 seconds, then reconnect and start up.
- Reinstall the battery driver. In Device Manager, open Batteries, right-click "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery", choose Uninstall device and restart. Windows reinstalls it.
- Update the BIOS and chipset drivers from your laptop maker, since charge-handling fixes are often included.
- Check for a charge limit. Conservation or battery-protection modes stop charging at around 60 to 80 percent, and that's normal.
- Recalibrate the gauge by charging to 100 percent, then using the laptop until it shuts down, then charging fully again. This corrects the percentage reading but does not restore lost capacity.
What doesn't work: freezing the battery, battery-saver apps that promise to restore capacity and DIY cell rewrapping. A pack is a matched set of cells with a protection circuit. Replacing individual cells risks overheating and fire, so the proper repair is a complete replacement pack for your model.
What should you do if the battery is swollen?
Stop using the laptop and don't charge it. A swollen lithium battery can leak or catch fire, so don't press on it, puncture it or keep it in a bag. Typical signs are a trackpad that lifts or clicks oddly, a gap between the lid and base, a bulging bottom cover or a keyboard that rises. Place the laptop on a hard, non-flammable surface and get a technician to remove the pack.

What does a battery replacement involve, and what does it cost?
The technician opens the base, disconnects and removes the old pack, fits a replacement matched to your model code, then tests charging and discharge. Some laptops have a removable battery, but most modern ones have an internal pack held by screws or adhesive, so the base has to come off.
| Device | Indicative price | Warranty |
|---|---|---|
| Windows laptop battery replacement | ₹1,499 - ₹4,999 | 90 Days |
| MacBook battery replacement | ₹3,499 - ₹6,999 | 90 Days |
Where your laptop sits depends on the pack's capacity and cell design, whether the pack is internal, and how easy the model is to source. Gaming laptops carry bigger packs, so they sit towards the top. The final figure is confirmed in writing, and the ₹350 inspection fee is refunded if you go ahead. Our laptop battery replacement and MacBook battery replacement pages give more detail, and the battery replacement cost guide compares typical scenarios.
Which habits slow battery wear?
Heat and constant full charge age cells fastest. Mumbai summers are hard on laptops left in hot bags or cars, so keep the laptop out of heat. If you're mostly plugged in, use your maker's charge limit, which holds the battery below full. Avoid draining to zero regularly. These habits won't reverse wear, but they slow it noticeably.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use my laptop without the battery?
Many laptops will run from the charger alone, but it isn't ideal. A power dip can shut the machine down mid-save, and some models refuse to start without a battery. If your battery is bulging, remove it professionally, don't improvise.
Is it bad to leave the laptop plugged in all day?
It isn't dangerous, but it keeps the battery at full charge, which accelerates ageing. Use a charge limit setting if your laptop has one, or let it cycle occasionally.
Why does the percentage fall suddenly?
A worn battery can't hold a steady voltage under load, so the gauge reads wrongly. Recalibration helps the reading, but if wear is high, replacement is the real fix.
How do I know the replacement battery is the right one?
It must match your model's battery code and capacity. Ask for the part code on the quote, and for a written warranty. Repairs from us include a 90-day warranty.
