What are the seven reasons a laptop stops charging?
The reasons below run roughly from the most common to the least common. For each one you'll find the sign that points to it, a way to confirm it, and what the repair looks like. Read down until one matches your laptop.
Reason 1: Is the charger or its cable faulty?
The charger is a very common culprit, because it takes the most abuse. The cable is bent every day, yanked at an angle and wrapped tightly around the brick. Fine copper strands near the plug or the brick snap, and the laptop then charges only when the cable is held at a certain angle. A brick that is humming, very hot or smells of burning is on its way out.
How to confirm: borrow a charger with the same voltage and equal or higher wattage, and try it. If the laptop charges at once, the old charger is dead. The repair: a new charger of the right specification. Avoid cheap unbranded adapters, which can supply unstable voltage and stress the battery and the board.
Reason 2: Is the charging port dirty, loose or worn?
Charging ports take a mechanical beating. The barrel socket or USB-C port can pack with lint, develop bent pins, or work loose from the board after repeated tugs. Laptops that sit on a lap with the cable dragging are the classic casualties. A loose port feels wobbly and may charge, then stop, as you move the cable.
How to confirm: with the laptop off, shine a torch into the port and look for lint or a bent centre pin. Wiggle the plug gently. Reason 3: Has the battery worn out?
Every battery loses capacity with each charge cycle, and eventually it can't accept or hold a charge. Signs include a laptop that dies as soon as you unplug it, a battery gauge that jumps between values, "consider replacing your battery" warnings, or a battery reported as "not detected" or "plugged in, not charging". In some laptops the battery's own protection circuit stops charging after a fault.

Reason 4: Could a setting or driver be blocking charging?
A software cause is the most frustrating, because everything looks physically fine. Many laptops include battery care features that cap charging at 80 percent, and they show "plugged in, not charging" when the cap is reached. Corrupted battery drivers can also confuse Windows about the charger. In both cases the hardware is healthy.
How to confirm: look in the maker's app (Lenovo Vantage, MyASUS, Dell Power Manager and HP's tools all have charge limits). Then, in Device Manager, uninstall the ACPI battery driver and the AC adapter entry and restart. The repair: change the setting, reinstall the driver, and update the BIOS if the maker lists a charging fix. Reason 5: Is the charger too weak, or is USB-C Power Delivery failing?
A charger that suits a lower-powered laptop may run a bigger one but never charge it. That happens often when someone swaps in a phone charger or a lower-wattage USB-C brick. USB-C laptops also need a charger and cable that agree on voltage and current through Power Delivery. A cable without the right rating can silently limit the wattage.
How to confirm: compare the watts printed on the original charger with the replacement. For USB-C, use a Power Delivery charger of at least the original wattage and a cable rated for it. Cables carrying more than about 60W need a chip inside, so a thin cable isn't a safe assumption. The repair: a correct charger and cable. If a proper charger doesn't charge the laptop, the USB-C port or charging controller needs a look.
When is the fault on the board or a safety risk?
The last two reasons are the ones to take to a technician rather than test further yourself.
Reason 6: Has the charging circuit on the motherboard failed?
When the charger, cable, port, battery and settings all test fine, the fault is on the board. The charging circuit includes a charger controller, power transistors and fuses, and surges, spills or a bad adapter can burn them out. A laptop in this state may refuse to charge at all, may only run with the charger plugged in, or may not start.
How to confirm: only bench testing confirms it, because a technician must measure voltages at each stage of the circuit. The repair: replacing the failed components.
