Unplug the charger, hold the power button until the laptop shuts down, and leave it off. Do not switch it on to check whether it survived. Remove anything detachable, blot the surface, and get the laptop to a technician within a day if you can. Corrosion works slowly, so speed matters far more than any home remedy.
What should you do in the first minute after a spill?
The first sixty seconds decide how far the liquid travels. Electricity is the real danger, because a powered board lets current flow through wet contacts and burn out components that would otherwise have survived. Cut the power first, then deal with the liquid. Follow these steps in order.
- Unplug the charger from the laptop itself, then from the wall.
- Hold the power button for about ten seconds to force a shutdown. Don't wait for Windows to close politely.
- Remove USB drives, SD cards, dongles and headphones. If your laptop has a removable battery, take it out.
- Open the lid partway and stand the laptop upside down in a tent shape over a towel, keyboard facing down. Gravity helps pull liquid away from the board.
- Blot visible liquid from the keys, ports and body with a lint-free cloth. Dab, don't wipe, so you don't push it inwards.
- Leave it tented in a dry, ventilated spot. Do not shake it.
- Arrange to have it opened up. Even if the keys feel dry, liquid is usually still trapped under the keyboard and around the board.
What should you never do to a wet laptop?
Most of the common home remedies make things worse. A few of them feel logical, which is exactly why they cause so much damage. Avoid these.
- Pressing the power button "just to see". This is the single most expensive mistake. A laptop that was recoverable at 9 PM can become a dead board at 9:01.
- Burying it in rice. Rice pulls very little moisture from inside a sealed chassis, and it can leave starch dust and grains in the ports and fan.
- Using a hair dryer or heater. Strong heat can warp plastic, soften adhesives and push liquid deeper under components.
- Charging it overnight "to see if it wakes up". A wet charging circuit can short and take out the power controller.
- Opening it without training. Ribbon connectors tear easily, and a battery that has taken on liquid should not be handled casually.
Why does the type of liquid change the outlook?
Clean water leaves the least behind, but "clean" is relative, because tap water carries dissolved minerals that conduct electricity and corrode contacts as it dries. Sugary, salty or acidic liquids are tougher. They leave a conductive or sticky residue that keeps attacking the board long after the surface looks dry.

What does a technician do to recover a water-damaged laptop?

- Inspection. The laptop is opened without power, and tide marks, discolouration and white or green deposits show how far the liquid went.

Not reliably. Surface moisture evaporates, but dissolved minerals, sugar and salt stay on the board and keep corroding. A laptop that boots after drying can still fail weeks later. Having it opened and cleaned is the dependable route.
