What is different inside the M2 and M3 MacBook Air?
Both generations share a redesigned flat chassis with a notched display, a 1080p camera, a Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and no fan. The M2 Air arrived in 2022 with a 13.6-inch screen, and a 15.3-inch version followed in 2023. The M3 Air came in 2024 in both sizes, adding Wi-Fi 6E and the ability to drive two external displays with the lid closed.
Three design choices shape every repair. Memory is part of the chip package, so it cannot be upgraded. The SSD is soldered, so it cannot be swapped either. And MagSafe 3 sits alongside two Thunderbolt and USB 4 ports, which means that if the magnetic port fails you can still charge through USB-C while you arrange a repair.

What causes screen damage on an Air, and what does it cost?
Most Air displays fail because of pressure, not because of dropping the laptop. Closing the lid on a pen, a charger, earbuds or a thick camera cover is a classic cause, since the gap between screen and keyboard is tiny. Apple itself warns that camera covers can damage the display on recent MacBooks.
Other usual causes are a laptop squeezed in a packed bag and a sharp corner knock. Pressure cracks often start near the centre or along the edge and then spread, with black ink-like patches or coloured lines. An Air's display is replaced as an assembly, including the lid, because the panel is bonded into it. How do you know the Air's battery needs replacing?
Look at the numbers, not just the feeling. Open System Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health to see the maximum capacity. Under System Information, Power shows cycle count and condition. Apple rates its MacBook batteries to keep up to 80 percent of original capacity at 1,000 charge cycles, so a count well beyond that, with short runtimes, points to wear.

- Sudden shutdowns: the Air turns off at 20 or 30 percent, then starts normally on charge.

Why does an Air keyboard fail, and how is it repaired?
Magic Keyboards in the M2 and M3 Air use a scissor mechanism that is more tolerant of dust than the older butterfly design. Failures are mostly caused by liquid spills or by impact damage. A single dead key is rare compared with a whole row or area failing after a spill.
The keyboard is part of the top case assembly, so a replacement means stripping the Air down, including the board, battery and trackpad. If the battery is also close to the end of its life, ask whether doing both together saves labour. Indicatively, a keyboard replacement is ₹3,499 to ₹8,999.

What looks like a fault on an Air but is not?
Several normal behaviours get mistaken for damage, and all of them can save you an inspection. The Air has no fan, so it spreads heat through the chassis. Under sustained load it gets warm and performance steps down to protect the chip. That is design, not a failing component.
- Warm base or slower exports: normal for a fanless laptop under long video or compile jobs.
- Slow after a macOS update: indexing and photo analysis run for a day or two, then settle.
- Menu bar icons vanishing: macOS hides icons that no longer fit beside the notch. Quit apps that add icons.
- Slow charging: a phone charger delivers far less power than the Air's own adapter.
- Beachballs with only 8GB of memory: check Memory Pressure in Activity Monitor before assuming a fault.
Some problems on an Air are genuine faults. A trackpad that stops clicking or sits slightly proud often means the battery beneath it is swelling, which is why trackpad repair and battery checks go together. A lid that creaks or will not hold its angle points to the hinge. Crackling speakers deserve a sound-settings check first, and a port that charges but will not connect devices suggests port wear.
Should you use Apple or an independent repairer?
Use Apple first if the Air is still under warranty or has AppleCare+ with accidental damage cover, because that is hard to beat for a young machine. Apple's standard warranty covers defects, not accidental damage. Out of warranty, an independent repair is usually cheaper and often faster, with free pickup and a written quote.
