A MacBook keyboard usually fails in one of three ways: a few keys stop or repeat, a whole row goes dead, or the keys feel gritty and stick. Each has a different cause, from a speck of dust under one key to a failed ribbon cable, and the repair route differs just as much. Keyboard replacement is indicatively ₹3,499 to ₹8,999, so it pays to diagnose before you spend.
Which MacBook keyboard do you have?
Apple has used two main designs in recent years, and they fail differently. The butterfly keyboard appeared on the 12-inch MacBook in 2015 and on MacBook Pro and Air models from 2016 to 2019. Its keys are very shallow and flat to type on, and a single grain of dust can stop one. The scissor-switch keyboard, used on older MacBooks and again from late 2019 on the 16-inch Pro and across the 2020 models and later, has more key travel and is more tolerant of dust.
To check which one you have, open the Apple menu, choose About This Mac and note the year. A MacBook Pro or Air from 2016 to 2019 almost certainly has the butterfly type, with the 16-inch Pro as the exception. The 2020 models, anything newer and the older pre-2015 designs have the scissor type. If you bought the Mac second-hand, confirm the year before assuming anything about its history.
The design matters for cost. On many recent MacBooks, the keyboard isn't a separate part you can slot in. It's bonded or riveted into the top case, sometimes along with the trackpad and battery. That's why the indicative range for keyboard replacement is wide, and why a simple-looking job can be a bigger repair. Our MacBook keyboard replacement page explains the options for each type.
What does each keyboard symptom point to?
Test before you decide. Open Keyboard Viewer from the input menu in the menu bar (switch the menu on in Keyboard settings if it isn't showing), and press the problem keys. The on-screen map shows whether macOS sees the press at all. The table below links common symptoms to their usual causes.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Try at home | Usual outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| One key types double or repeats | Debris under the key | Compressed-air method below | Often cleared, otherwise keyboard replacement |
| One key does nothing | Debris or a worn switch | Same method, then test in Keyboard Viewer | Replacement if cleaning fails |
| A whole row or area is dead | Ribbon cable or keyboard fault | Check if the keys work in Recovery | Keyboard repair |
| Keys type by themselves, case looks warped | Swollen battery pushing from below | Stop charging, unplug | Battery replacement, ₹3,499 - ₹6,999 |
| Sticky keys after a spill | Liquid residue | Switch off, don't charge | Liquid damage restoration, ₹2,999 - ₹12,999 |
The Recovery test is useful. Restart into macOS Recovery and try the keys there. If they work, the fault lives in macOS or in a setting. If they don't, the hardware is responsible. A swollen battery matters here too, because it can distort the case from underneath. Our MacBook water damage repair page explains what we do after spills.
How do you clean a MacBook keyboard safely?
Apple's own method is the safest at-home option for keys that stick or repeat. It needs only a can of compressed air with a thin straw.
- Shut the Mac down and disconnect everything.
- Hold the MacBook at roughly a 75-degree angle, with the keyboard facing you.
- Keep the can upright, and spray in short bursts, moving left to right across the keyboard.
- Rotate the Mac onto its right side and repeat, then onto its left side and repeat once more.
- Restart and test the problem keys.
Never spray liquid or disinfectant into a keyboard, and don't pry keycaps off a butterfly keyboard, because the tiny clips snap easily and turn a cleaning job into a replacement. If the method doesn't solve it after a second attempt, stop. More effort at home only risks more damage.
What actually happens during a MacBook keyboard replacement?
On many recent models, the keyboard sits at the very bottom of the build order. To reach it, a technician removes most of the internal parts: the battery, trackpad, speakers and logic board, and often detaches the display as well. The new top case goes in, and every part is then refitted. That explains both the price and the care required. A rushed job risks bent cables, lifted adhesive and scratched ports. Our MacBook keyboard repair cost guide shows what drives the quote.
If the cost is more than you want to pay right now, an external USB or Bluetooth keyboard is a workable stopgap. Use it only if nothing is warped, hot or swollen. Once keys begin to fail across the board, not just one at a time, repairing sooner usually costs less than months of workarounds.
How can you protect the screen and battery as well?
A keyboard that's fine today can still wreck a display tomorrow. MacBook lids close with very little clearance above the keys, so anything between them, such as a thick keyboard cover, a webcam cover or a stray earbud, can press a mark or crack into the screen. If you use a cover, make it very thin, and take it off before closing the lid. A cracked display assembly is indicatively ₹8,999 to ₹28,999. See our MacBook screen repair page for how that repair works.
Battery habits matter just as much. Leave Optimised Battery Charging switched on, and avoid leaving the Mac in a hot place. Check cycle count and condition under System Information, then Power, and replace the battery when it reads Service Recommended or the case begins to bulge. A MacBook battery replacement is indicatively ₹3,499 to ₹6,999, and our battery replacement page covers what's involved.

Frequently asked questions
Can a single MacBook key be replaced?
Sometimes. It depends on the model, because on many MacBooks the key mechanism isn't sold separately and the whole keyboard or top case is replaced. We check the model first and quote the realistic route.
Will a spill always ruin a MacBook?
No. Switch it off immediately, don't charge it and bring it in quickly. Early cleaning stops corrosion spreading, and many spills are recoverable.
Why do my MacBook keys type by themselves?
Liquid residue, a damaged keyboard cable or a swollen battery pressing on the keyboard can all cause phantom key presses. Stop charging the Mac and have the battery checked before anything else.
Do keyboard covers protect a MacBook?
A very thin cover keeps crumbs out, but a thick one adds height that can press into the display when the lid closes. Apple's own guidance is to remove any cover before closing the lid, so if in doubt, leave it off.
How long does MacBook keyboard replacement take?
It depends on the model and parts. We give you the timeline in the written quote, before any work starts.
