Whether you own a MacBook Air or a MacBook Pro changes what tends to go wrong and what a repair costs. Recent Airs have no fan and run cool on light work, while Pros have fans, more ports and brighter displays, which means more parts to wear or break. Knowing your exact model also tells you what's soldered, what's replaceable and whether a logic board repair is worth doing.
How do the Air and Pro differ when something breaks?
Both families have moved to a sealed, largely soldered design, yet the differences still shape the repair. The table compares the points that matter most, using the current Apple silicon generations unless noted.
| Feature | MacBook Air | MacBook Pro | What it means for repair |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cooling | Fanless on Apple silicon models, though Intel-era Airs had a fan | Fans on all models, with larger heatsinks on 14-inch and 16-inch | Pros can need fan replacement or cleaning, while Airs throttle instead |
| Ports | Two USB-C ports on most models, plus MagSafe on M2 and later | 2 to 3 USB-C or Thunderbolt ports, and HDMI, SD and MagSafe on 14-inch and 16-inch | Port wear is common on Airs because there are few ports, while Pros have more to fail |
| Display | Retina or Liquid Retina LCD | Liquid Retina XDR with ProMotion on 14-inch and 16-inch | XDR panels sit towards the upper end of the price range |
| Touch Bar | None | Present on 2016 to 2022 13-inch models and 2016 to 2019 15-inch and 16-inch | Touch Bar faults apply only to those older Pros |
| Logic board | Smaller board, fewer circuits | Larger board, more power and port circuitry | Pro board repairs can be more involved |

How do you identify your exact Air or Pro?
Two MacBooks with the same screen size can have different internals, so the year and chip decide the repair. Here's how to read yours:
- Open the Apple menu, choose About This Mac, and note the chip (M1, M2, M3 or an Intel processor) and the year.
- Note the screen size, measured diagonally: 13, 14, 15 or 16 inches.
- Turn the Mac over and read the A-number engraved on the underside. It's the most precise way to name the model.
- For the full model identifier, open System Information and look under Hardware.
Give us those details when you book, and we can tell you in advance which parts are likely to apply and what range to expect.
Why do the Air and Pro handle heat so differently?
An Air without a fan sheds heat through its aluminium body. Under a long video call or a heavy export, it protects itself by slowing down, so the usual complaint is lag, not noise. A Pro with a fan moves heat out actively, so its usual complaint is a fan that's loud, stuck at high speed or clogged with dust. The two fixes are completely different.
For an Air, a warm case and a slowdown are normal under load. A case that's too hot to touch, a sudden shutdown, or a bulge in the body is not, and that points to the battery. For a Pro, constant fan noise at idle suggests dust, a failing fan bearing or a runaway process, so check Activity Monitor first. Our MacBook fan replacement page covers the hardware side, and our overheating fix handles the rest.
What usually fails on an Air, and what on a Pro?
Airs often arrive with display damage, battery wear and port trouble, because they travel in bags and rely on only a couple of USB-C ports for everything. Liquid spills are also common on both. A cracked display assembly is indicatively ₹8,999 to ₹28,999, and port repair is ₹1,499 to ₹4,999. Both ranges depend on the exact model.
Pros have the same list plus fans, heavier workloads and, on older models, Touch Bar and keyboard faults. The Touch Bar can freeze or go dark while the Mac works normally, and a restart of the Touch Bar process or the Mac often brings it back. If it stays dark, the strip or its cable needs inspection. Keyboard replacement is indicatively ₹3,499 to ₹8,999, and trackpad replacement ₹2,999 to ₹6,999.
When does a logic board repair make sense on an Air or Pro?
It makes sense when the fault is narrow and the machine is otherwise sound. Indicatively, logic board and chip-level repair costs ₹4,999 to ₹18,999, which reflects how different the faults are. In general, the processor itself is rarely the culprit. The fault is more often in the power, charging or port circuitry around it, or in corrosion left by a spill. That's why a no-power Mac isn't automatically a write-off.
Because memory and storage are fixed to the board on current models, data goes where the board goes. A board swap loses your files, whereas repairing your own board keeps them. For this reason, we diagnose first and explain the options. Our MacBook logic board repair page gives more detail on what's involved.
Is repairing an Air or Pro worth it, or is replacing smarter?
Compare the quote with what the Mac is worth to you, not just its resale value. A battery or port repair on a healthy M1 Air is clearly sensible. A board repair on a heavily used older Pro is a closer call, and we'll lay out the numbers honestly. If repair doesn't make sense, we also buy old laptops, so you can ask for a buyback figure and put it towards the next machine.

Frequently asked questions
Is a MacBook Air cheaper to repair than a Pro?
Often, but not always. Smaller, simpler parts tend to cost less, yet a logic board or liquid fault can cost similar amounts on either. Your quote depends on the exact model and the fault, not the name.
Why does my MacBook Air feel hot with no fan?
It spreads heat through its body, so a warm case under load is normal. If it's very hot, shuts down, or the case looks swollen, stop using it and have the battery inspected.
Can MacBook Pro fans be replaced?
Yes, and so can the thermal paste on models where it applies. We quote after inspection, because the right fix depends on whether the fan is clogged, noisy or failed.
Can Apple silicon MacBooks have their logic boards repaired?
Many faults, yes, especially those in power, charging and port circuits. Some boards are beyond repair, and we say so plainly after the inspection.
