Older MacBooks are worth repairing more often than people expect, but what you can upgrade depends almost entirely on the model year, so identifying your Mac comes first.
How do you find out which MacBook you own, and why does it matter?
Click the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. A line reading "Chip" means Apple silicon (M1 or later), while "Processor" means an Intel Mac. The model year appears under the name. The A-number printed on the underside of the case, such as A1502, identifies the exact hardware. We use it to match the right battery, keyboard or SSD to your Mac.
This matters because repairability changed sharply over the years. Older Macs let you swap parts; newer ones solder them to the board. A quote that suits a 2014 MacBook Air makes no sense for an M2 model, so it pays to read out the model year and A-number when you call, rather than saying "MacBook Pro".
What can you actually upgrade on an older MacBook?
It depends on the generation. Some older MacBook Pro models use standard memory and drives, many 2012 to 2015 Air and Retina models take a swappable SSD module but have soldered memory, and recent Macs solder both. For compatible models, an SSD upgrade has an indicative price of ₹3,999 to ₹14,999, with the final quote driven by capacity and the module your Mac uses.
| Mac generation (roughly) | Memory | Storage |
|---|---|---|
| Older non-Retina MacBook Pro | Often replaceable | Standard drive, replaceable |
| 2012 to 2015 Air and Retina models | Soldered | Swappable module on many, with the right part |
| MacBook Pro from about 2016, Air from about 2018 | Soldered | Soldered |
| All Apple silicon Macs | Soldered, part of the chip package | Soldered |
Where storage is soldered, an external Thunderbolt or USB-C SSD is the practical way to add room for photos and videos. On older models with a swappable module, our MacBook SSD upgrade page explains which drives fit, because standard laptop SSDs usually don't.
Why is an older MacBook slow even after a clean-up?
Four causes account for most slow older Macs: a nearly full drive, too many login items, dust and old thermal paste, and an ageing battery. Check them in that order. Open Activity Monitor, choose the Memory tab and look at the memory pressure graph. Green is healthy, yellow means strain and red means the Mac is short of RAM.
- Free up storage. macOS needs spare room for swap files and caches. A nearly full drive slows everything.
- Trim login items. In System Settings, open General and then Login Items. Remove helper apps you don't use.
- Listen to the fan. A fan that spins hard during simple tasks on an Intel model suggests dust or dried paste. See MacBook fan replacement if the fan itself is failing.
- Check the battery. Under System Information, Power shows the cycle count and condition.
- Consider a clean macOS install. A reinstall with data migration has an indicative range of ₹1,499 to ₹2,999.
One honest limit: Apple stops supporting new macOS versions on old hardware. Your Mac keeps working, but some apps eventually need a newer macOS than it can run. That is a reason to plan a replacement, not a reason to avoid a cheap repair that keeps the Mac useful meanwhile.
What does a sticky or dead keyboard cost to fix?
Keyboard replacement on a MacBook starts at an indicative ₹3,499 and can reach ₹8,999. The price runs higher than on most Windows laptops because the keyboard usually sits in the same top-case assembly as the trackpad and the battery, so more of the machine has to be rebuilt. Try a gentle fix first before you pay.
If a single key feels gritty or sticks, a few short bursts of compressed air at an angle can clear dust beneath it. Don't prise the key off, because the mechanism breaks easily. If several keys misbehave or the keyboard has had liquid in it, stop and get it checked. Our MacBook keyboard replacement page covers what the job involves.
Should you repair, sell or replace?
A common rule of thumb is to compare the quote with the price of a comparable refurbished Mac. If the repair costs more than about half of that, think carefully. A battery on an otherwise healthy Mac is almost always worth doing. A failed logic board on a very old model may not be. Our MacBook repair cost guide helps you weigh it.
If you decide to move on, we also buy old laptops, and you can see the sell your laptop page for details. We tell you plainly after diagnosis when a repair doesn't make financial sense.
How do you get an old MacBook ready to sell or hand down?
Before a MacBook changes hands, remove your data and your Apple account from it. Skipping this leaves the next owner locked out and leaves your files exposed. If you are moving to a new Mac, the order matters, so follow these steps.
- Back up first. Make a Time Machine backup or copy your files elsewhere, and check that you can open them.
- Sign out of your Apple Account. Do this in System Settings, which also turns off Find My for the Mac.
- Erase the Mac. On Apple silicon and T2 Macs running a recent macOS, use Erase All Content and Settings. On older Macs, restart into Recovery, erase the disk and reinstall macOS.
- Remove it from your account. Check your Apple Account's device list and remove the old Mac so that Activation Lock can't block the next owner.
- Clean it up. A wipe of the keyboard, screen and ports helps the Mac look as good as it works.
Only then should you hand it over or sell it. If the Mac has a fault that lowers its value, such as a tired battery, repairing it first can raise the price you get. We can quote for that repair, and our buyback service gives you another route.

Frequently asked questions
Can I add more RAM to my MacBook?
Only on a small number of older models. Most MacBooks from the Retina era onwards have soldered memory, and Apple silicon Macs build it into the chip package. We can confirm from your A-number whether yours is upgradeable.
Is a MacBook battery replacement worth it on an old Mac?
Usually yes, if the rest of the Mac works. Indicative prices run from ₹3,499 to ₹6,999, far less than a new machine. See MacBook battery replacement for the signs that it's time.
Why won't my old MacBook install the latest macOS?
Apple limits each macOS release to specific models, and older hardware eventually falls outside that list. The Mac still runs its last supported version. A clean reinstall of that version often restores speed.
Do you repair both Intel and Apple silicon MacBooks?
Yes. Tell us the model year or A-number when you book, and we confirm the parts and price in a written quote before we start.
If your MacBook needs attention, you can book a free pickup or ask for a quote and get a written estimate before any work begins.
