Thermal paste is a grey or silver compound applied between your laptop's CPU (and sometimes GPU) and its heat sink. Its job is to fill microscopic air gaps that would otherwise trap heat and prevent efficient thermal transfer. Without it, processors would overheat within seconds of starting up.
The problem: thermal paste does not last forever. It dries, cracks, and eventually stops conducting heat well — usually 3 to 5 years into a laptop's life. When it does, your laptop gets hotter, thermal throttling kicks in (the CPU deliberately slows itself down to protect from heat damage), and the machine starts feeling slow for no obvious software reason.
How Does Thermal Paste Work?
Your CPU generates heat as it processes. A metal heat sink sits on top of the CPU to absorb and spread that heat. A fan then draws air across the heat sink and exhausts it through vents. The problem is that metal surfaces, no matter how precisely machined, are not perfectly flat — there are microscopic ridges and valleys. Air trapped in those gaps is a terrible heat conductor. Thermal paste fills those gaps with a material that transfers heat far better than air.
Signs Your Laptop Needs Thermal Paste Replacement
- The laptop runs much hotter than it used to — if you remember it being quiet and cool, and it now gets uncomfortably hot during normal use, dried paste is a prime suspect.
- The fan runs at high speed constantly — even during light tasks like browsing or writing documents.
- Performance has dropped noticeably — the CPU is throttling to protect itself from heat. A browser that felt instant now lags. Video playback stutters.
- The laptop shuts down unexpectedly under load — thermal protection kicking in to prevent hardware damage.
- It is more than 4 years old and has never been serviced — thermal paste dries out on a schedule, regardless of symptoms. If yours has never been done, it needs attention.
How Much Does Thermal Paste Replacement Cost?
At Xigox, thermal paste replacement including full disassembly, fan cleaning, and reassembly starts at ₹499. For premium laptops (MacBook, gaming machines with dual heat pipes), it is ₹799–₹999. The paste itself costs ₹150–₹400 for a quality product — the rest is the skilled disassembly time required to access the CPU safely.
| Service | Starting Price |
|---|---|
| Thermal paste replacement (standard laptop) | ₹499 |
| Thermal paste + full fan cleaning | ₹649 |
| Gaming laptop thermal service (dual heat pipe) | ₹899 |
| MacBook thermal paste replacement | ₹999 |
How Often Should Thermal Paste Be Replaced?
For standard use: every 3 to 5 years. For gaming laptops or machines used for video rendering and other heavy workloads: every 2 to 3 years. If you are noticing overheating symptoms before that schedule, the paste may have dried prematurely — which happens faster in hot climates (Mumbai summers are harsh on laptop cooling) and machines that run at sustained high temperatures.
Can You Replace Thermal Paste Yourself?
Technically yes — it is not complex. Practically, laptop disassembly is increasingly risky. Modern slim laptops use fragile ribbon cables, proprietary screws, and brittle plastic clips that break easily without the right tools and experience. A ₹499 professional service avoids the risk of a far more expensive repair if something goes wrong during DIY disassembly.
That said, if you are comfortable disassembling your specific model (ThinkPads and older business laptops are much easier than thin ultrabooks), Arctic MX-6 or Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut are the pastes our technicians use.
What to Expect After Thermal Paste Replacement
Most customers see a 10–20°C drop in CPU temperatures under load. The fan becomes quieter. Performance under sustained load improves noticeably because the CPU is no longer throttling. On older machines that were struggling with basic tasks, this single service can make the laptop feel like a different machine.
The Full Thermal Service Package
Thermal paste alone addresses only part of the heat equation. Our full thermal service includes:
- Full disassembly and dust removal from fan blades and heat sink fins
- Old paste removed with isopropyl alcohol
- Fresh high-quality thermal paste applied
- Fan tested and replaced if bearing is worn
- Reassembly and temperature testing under load
