Brother printers fall into three families, and setup differs a little for each: DCP-T ink tank models, HL mono lasers and MFC multifunction lasers. Which Brother family does your printer belong to?
Brother's model names are more logical than they first appear, and reading them tells you what you own. The letters after the series prefix describe features: W means built-in wireless, and D means automatic two-sided (duplex) printing. So a DCP-T720DW has both, while an HL-L2321D prints double-sided but has no W in its name, so it has no built-in wireless.

How do you set up a Brother printer from scratch?
- Remove packing material. On lasers, take out the drum and toner assembly and strip any orange protective parts. On DCP-T models, remove tape from the tank area and the print head cover.
- Fill or seat the supplies. Laser drum and toner units simply slide in. On ink tank models, pour each bottle into its matching colour tank, stop at the fill line, and let the printer finish its first-time ink preparation without interruption.
- Load paper and set the paper size on the control panel.

- Install the full driver and software package from Brother's support site for your exact model. The basic Windows driver prints but may not support the Scan button or all the machine's features.
- Print a test page, then reserve the printer's address on the router so it doesn't wander.
On many newer Brother models, the admin password isn't a generic default. It's printed on a label at the back or underside, so check there before resetting anything. Whatever your model, change any default password you find.
What do Brother toner and drum messages mean?
Brother mono lasers use two consumables: a toner cartridge and a separate drum unit. Toner Low and Replace Toner relate to the powder. Replace Drum is triggered by a page counter and doesn't measure the drum's physical wear, so a drum may print well for a while after the message appears. Buy the replacement, but judge by print quality.
The Drum Error message and thin vertical black lines usually point to dust on the corona wire. The drum unit carries a slider tab, often green, for cleaning it. Remove the toner from the drum, slide the tab slowly from one end to the other several times, and return it to its home position before reassembling. Do this on a clean surface, and keep the drum away from sunlight.
If the printer still says No Toner after you've fitted a new cartridge, remove it and reseat it firmly until it clicks. Check that you removed the orange protective cover or the sealing strip. Compatible cartridges can also cause this message when their chips aren't read correctly, so test with a genuine one if you have it.
How do you fix common Wi-Fi, scanning and ink tank problems?
Printer shows offline or can't be found
Print the network configuration report and compare its IP address with the port on your computer. A router restart often hands the printer a new address. Reserve one for it, then update the port or remove and re-add the printer using the address from the report. Our offline fix guide explains the port steps.
Scan button does nothing
On a multifunction model, printing works with a basic driver, but scanning needs the full software package or Brother's iPrint&Scan app. Reinstall the full package, then try scanning from the app or from the Windows Scan program. If the scan produces black lines, clean the glass and the feeder strip with a lint-free cloth.
Ink tank model prints pale or in bands
DCP-T models can clog if left idle. Check that each tank has ink above its lower mark, then run the head cleaning from the control panel once, print a test page, and wait before a second attempt. Printing a colour page weekly prevents most clogs. A waste ink absorber warning is a physical limit, and wording varies by model. It needs servicing, not a software reset.
What routine care keeps a Brother printer healthy?
Brothers are known as dependable workhorses, but a few habits keep them that way. The right ones depend on the family.
- DCP-T ink tank models: print a colour page or a nozzle check every week, keep the tanks above the lower mark, switch off with the power button, and refill in a well-lit spot so you can read the colour labels.
- HL and MFC lasers: keep them in a dust-free room, use dry paper, clean the corona wire when thin vertical lines appear, and wipe the document feeder rollers on MFC models.
- All models: install firmware updates when nothing is printing, keep the admin password somewhere safe, and note the model number and serial number on a label inside the lid.

When does a Brother need a technician?
Book a repair when errors persist after you've reseated supplies, when the printer jams with a clear path, when you hear gears slipping, or when it won't power on. Opening a laser's fuser area or an ink tank's head assembly is a bench job.

The message follows a page counter, not a physical test. If prints are clean, you can keep going until quality drops, but order a replacement so you aren't caught out.
